"To-day
Inger
and I did some shopping without
Lili
knowing what we were about. We must
make some preparations for the journey to
Dresden
. In the afternoon we returned to
Lili
, bringing with us a big cardboard
box. 'Guess what we have brought you,' I said gaily.
Lili
regarded us calmly, without a smile.
'I don't know.' That was her only answer. Then
Inger
opened the box. '
Lili
. . .' said
Inger
, spreading out the coat in front of
Lili
, and showing her the silk lining.
Lili
looked at the coat, and said: 'But
Professor Kreutz
will send me away if I appear before
him in this attire. He won't recognize me at all.' And her
eyes looked so sad. Really, they are always sad, even when
she smiles.
Andreas
had quite different eyes. So had
Lili
in
Paris
. I think the eyes of the
Lili
to-day are not yet quite awake. She
does not
yet believe. . . . Or is it that she
will not yet show that she believes?"

... »Uden at
Lili
vidste det, har
Inger
og jeg truffet Forberedelser til
hendes Rejse til
Dresden
d1c12d02p02
Lili
saa paa os og svarede uden et
Smil:
d1c12d02p03
— Nej, det kan jeg ikke!
d1c12d02p04
Inger
skar Seglgarnet over og trak en
dejlig, brun Pels op af Æsken.
d1c12d02p05
— Den er til Dig,
Lili
, sagde
Inger
og bredte Pelsen ud foran hende og
viste hende det lækre, bløde Silkefoer ......
d1c12d02p06
tror I,
Professor Kreutz
d1c12d02p07
Og hendes Øjne blev bedrøvede ......
Aah, Gud, hendes Øjne! ...... Egentlig er de bedrøvede, ogsaa
naar hun ler.
Andreas
' Øjne var helt anderledes ......
ogsaa
Lili
s hjemme i
Paris
...... Det er, som om den nye
Lili
s Øjne endnu ikke er rigtig vaagne
...... som om de endnu ikke
tror
...... eller de tør maaske ikke vise,
hvad de tror.«

Lili
's knowledge,
Inger
and I have made preparations for her

'Try to guess what this is?' I
said.

Lili
looked at us and replied without a

d1-trc12d02p03
'No, I can't!'
d1-trc12d02p04
Inger
cut through the string and pulled a
lovely brown fur coat out of the box.
d1-trc12d02p05
'This is for you,
Lili

Inger
said and spread the coat in front of
her and showed her the lovely, soft silk lining

'That is sweet of you, she answered,

God, her eyes! ...... Really, they are sad, also when she

Lili

»Mit
Inger
hatte ich heute, ohne daß
Lili
wußte, was wir vorhatten, Besorgungen
gemacht.
Andreas
hatte ganz andere Augen. Auch die
Lili
in
Paris
. Ich glaube, die Augen der
Lili
von heute sind noch nicht ganz wach
geworden. Sie glauben noch nicht . . . Oder mag sie es noch
nicht zeigen, daß sie glaubt?«
